1. Bonita Vista
The Lady Barons showed why they have finished at the top of the south bay for the past 3 seasons. The Barons cruised through the mesa league beating their opponents by an average of 42.9 points. The Barons were one of the top teams in the state and finished 2 points shy of knocking off the nationally ranked #1 La Jolla Country Day Torreys in the open division semi-finals, barely missing the section championship game. The Lady Barons remain the #1 girls basketball team in the south bay. Let’s not forget that Coach Tristan Lamb will only lose 1 senior that played this season, with the remaining roster set to return.
2. Mater Dei
Finishing 2nd in Mesa league for the 3rd straight year, the Lady Crusaders are still working to put out the flame lit by the Lady Barons. They finished at the 8 seed in the open division which put them in a 1st round playoff match up with another private school at La Jolla Country Day. They would lose that game then be placed
in the Division II state playoff brackets where they made a run falling in the regional semi-finals against a scorching Palisades team. They will lose Marissa Sanchez but will bring pack Kayanna Spriggs who looks like she will have a huge senior year.
3. Otay Ranch
It has been at least 4 years since the Lady Mustangs finished 3rd place in the Metro league. Not only did they place 3rd in league the Lady Mustangs made it to the San Diego Division III CIF championship game, where they lost a nail bitter to a very solid Lincoln team. They were the 3rd of 3 south bay teams that competed in the state playoffs. They made it to the 2nd round of the Division IV state brackets before they took a loss to La Salle of Pasadena. Coach Rene Barrera loses the high IQ of guard Lynette Garon as he moves into Division I next season where they will see some much needed competition, to get the young squad some experience against solid teams.
4. Chula Vista
Chula Vista remains south bay league champions for the 4th straight year finishing at #4 in the south bay. They had a solid season finishing 19-10 with a key win over Eastlake early in the season that landed them at the #4 spot in the South bay. Morse High was a thorn in their side as they faced off with the Lady Tigers 3 times during the regular season to be matched up for a fourth time in the first round of Division III playoffs loosing all 4 contest. Even though in the 1st of the 4 contest they seen a 20 point lead disappear loosing by 2 which may have got in their heads for the remaining contest. Coach John DeJesus now sees his team possibly moving over to the Mesa league due to league realignments even after loosing 7 seniors.
5. Eastlake
Eastlake stock is slowly but surely starting to rise. After a last place finish in league last season they finished slightly higher this season coming in at 4 in the Mesa. They have a freshman guard Faith Esquer that may be able to lead the titans if they can find a core that can play together. They are still rebuilding but if a couple more players step up you can expect to see the lady titans back in the mix.
